Founded in 1922, the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang is the oldest marine research establishment in the country. It sits in the Cau Da area at the southern end of the city and works as both a laboratory and a public exhibition.
The displays run to tanks of living marine species, a preserved-specimen hall holding tens of thousands of samples gathered over a century, and a room built around the skeleton of a humpback whale more than ten metres long, excavated from farmland in the Red River delta.
The specimen hall is the best of it and the part most visitors walk past: wall after wall of glass jars, labelled across a century in several languages, the record of a hundred years of surveying this coast. Commercial aquariums have nothing like it.
It suits families with children and anyone wanting to understand this stretch of sea beyond swimming and diving. The feel is closer to an old natural-history museum than a modern aquarium — come expecting that.
The institute shares its quarter with the Cau Da cable car station, so the two pair naturally. An unhurried visit runs one to two hours. Since most of it is indoors and roofed, this is among the best options for a wet day or the fiercest part of the afternoon.
