Van Phong is the largest bay in Khanh Hoa, in the north of the province, sheltered by the Hon Gom peninsula and consequently very calm. It is known for the clarity of its water and for stretches of white sand that construction has barely touched.
The conditions suit diving, sailing and wind-dependent water sports. Compared with Nha Trang Bay it is far quieter and far less serviced — which is both the appeal and the thing to prepare for.
The bay is 60 to 80 km from Nha Trang depending on where you are headed, an hour and a half to two hours by road. It needs a full day, and it needs you to decide in advance exactly where you are going.
That is the point that matters most: “Van Phong” names a whole bay, not a destination. Its beaches and dive sites are scattered around the shoreline, conditions and facilities vary sharply between them, and some are reachable only by boat. Research the specific spot rather than travelling on the name.
Tourism infrastructure remains thin and the area is under active development, so information online dates quickly. Don’t count on a lifeguard or nearby medical help; carry water, food and whatever else the day requires.
